Use five tests for every existing element

A room-by-room starting framework
Built-in carpentry
Retain carpentry only when the structure, internal condition, dimensions and layout remain useful. Peeling laminates can sometimes be repaired, but swelling, persistent moisture damage, unsuitable internal divisions or a poor fit with the new room plan can make replacement more sensible.
Flooring
Check level differences, hollow or damaged finishes, moisture concerns and how retained flooring will meet new built-ins or removed partitions. A cosmetically acceptable floor may still limit the new layout or create awkward patching.
False ceilings and lighting
Review the ceiling condition, access to concealed services, remaining height and compatibility with the new lighting plan. Retaining a ceiling can reduce work, but only if it does not preserve obsolete wiring routes, failed lighting or inaccessible problems.
Electrical points and wiring
Map points against the proposed furniture and daily activities. Visible condition alone does not establish whether the existing installation is suitable. Electrical work should be assessed and carried out by the appropriate licensed professional.
Plumbing and wet areas
Look for leakage history, pipe condition, waterproofing implications and how new sanitary or kitchen positions affect the system. A partial renovation should not conceal a known problem behind new carpentry.
Doors, windows and fixtures
Consider operation, alignment, hardware condition, safety, compliance and whether each item fits the new design. Some pieces can be refinished or re-used; others are more economical to replace before surrounding work is completed.
When full removal makes more sense
- The existing layout prevents the planned circulation or room configuration.
- Several connected systems would need invasive replacement later.
- Hidden damage or deterioration is discovered during inspection.
- New work cannot be installed correctly around the retained element.
- Patch repairs would leave a visibly fragmented or difficult-to-maintain result.
When selective retention creates better value
- The element is sound, useful and compatible with the new plan.
- Replacement would add cost without improving function or durability.
- The retained item can be protected during construction and integrated cleanly.
- Its condition can be verified before surrounding work closes access.
